"I've seen Dr. Kalantar since 2013 for lumbar back pain and in 2014 he performed an L5-S1 microdiscectomy on me. He's a fantastic doctor and an incredibly talented surgeon. He's the chief of the Division of Spine Surgery in the Department of Orthopedics and the Co-Director of MedStar Spine Center as well as a 2019 Top Doctor for Spinal Surgery in Washington, D.C. (so safe to say you're quite literally in good hands). He doesn't sugarcoat things or add a lot of fluff to diagnoses or prognoses - he's about as direct as they come - but when you're dealing with something as serious as the health of your spine, that's the approach I prefer. Both before and after my surgery he was diligent with my follow up and care and there wasn't a moment when I didn't feel like I was in good hands. Given how popular and good he is, one downside is it can be quite difficult to get in to see him for an appointment. Once you get in, he can often be quite backlogged and you might wait a bit past your initial appointment time. Nonetheless, both worth it to me to see whom I consider one of, if not the top orthopedic spine surgeon in the DMV area. (ProTip: Medstar can be a bit tricky to book appointments, especially as he works out of three locations, my last few appointments I've all seamlessly booked through ZocDoc)."
