"Six years ago my husband suffered from severe back pain and saw several physicians in our hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. As he was getting progressively worse, we went to Johns Hopkins to have evaluations by the head of spinal neurosurgery and the head of Pain Management. Arriving in a wheelchair, my husband had his first appointment with Dr. Stephen Cohen. After a thorough examination, Dr. Cohen diagnosed my husband's issues, and told him to cancel his appointment with the neurosurgeon as Dr. Cohen felt he could handle my husband's condition without surgery. Two outpatient procedures later, my husband was pain-free and today can walk six miles, ride a bike 10 miles and work out in the gym daily. Dr. Cohen gave my husband his pain free life back! As a result of friends and family seeing the incredible recovery my husband made, 29 people have followed his lead to seek out Dr. Cohen at John's Hopkins. Of these patients, several have followed him to Northwestern Medical for treatment. Most of these patients have received good results from Dr. Cohen's treatments, although a few were taken with his honesty when he shared with them he lamented that their conditions were such that he was sorry that he could not help them. Dr. Cohen's integrity and caring disposition make him an exceptional physician. I, too, have been Dr. Cohen's patient for six years. Unlike my husband who only needed an epidural lysis and and a radio frequency ablation, I have had multiple visits that included steroid injections, ablations, etc., with each procedure giving me relief from pain. This past week, I made my first visit to see Dr. Cohen at Northwestern Medicine for a consultation. Dr. Cohen and his staff greeted my husband and me, but we then had to wait a long time to be seen. It turns out that there had been a problem with another patient that caused the delay. Dr. Cohen is world renowned and therefore incredibly busy. He and his team spend as much time with each patient as is needed, which makes a patient's wait time to be seen understandable. When I was examined by Dr. Cohen and his incredible Harvard trained Fellow, they determined what was causing my pain. I assumed I would have to make another trip from Virginia to Chicago to be treated; however, Dr. Cohen and his team took me into their treatment room and administered the appropriate steroid injections. They all stayed after their normal quitting time to work on me. Two days later I am already feeling like a new person. Although my condition is such that this probably won't be a permanent "fix," I am grateful to Dr. Cohen for the wonderful care he has given me. Patti and Jules Wainger"

"I had the displeasure of encountering this individual for pain management. I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis (death of the bone) and I experience non stop excruciating,, debilitating pain. He was very condescending, disrespectful, and dismissive. He repeatedly told me "if something is dead, it doesn't hurt" and "opiod dependent people like you die sooner according to studies". I was not taking any opioids, he didn't ask. He then proceeded to prescribe me Cymbalta because studies show it treats pain as well as mental health issues. Yet, he was emphatic that I couldn't be experiencing pain. It made me violently ill. At my follow up, he was worse. It was so bad, my sister recorded the interaction. I left in tears, feeling disrespected, hopeless, and untreated. He suggested that I seek treatment at the Mayo Clinic (I had already received surgery and treatment there and told to pursue maintenance locally), get acupuncture, and purchase a muscle stimulator from Amazon ("It's not that expensive"). He's a vile human being. As a result, my mental health has diminished and he faced no accountability for his actions towards me."

"Excellent experience with Dr. Cohen. My mother, based in Chicago recently required the services of a pain management specialist and being I am based in NY I was more than concerned trying to locate a quality doctor for her care. A local doctor here in NY, recommended I contact Dr. Cohen being they worked together for decades at John Hopkins. I did the old google search before making an appointment for her and it was apparent Dr. Cohen is not just any pain management specialist, he is probably the leading pain management specialists in the country and I felt very comfortable with my mother seeing him. Even though I was not local, Dr. Cohen went above and beyond to keep me up to date with my mother's treatment plan and progress. His level of expertise is unmatched and found him to be a very caring doctor that provided high quality care. His knowledge is really hard to match and very thankful for the services he provided."

"Pain is tough and it's an endurance test more than anything. We all wish it was an easy answer and a quick fix. That's why you want folks like Dr Cohen on your side. Dr Cohen is an eminent scholar who most ALL of the national medical societies look to get input from. He's that good. (I was also impressed reading about Dr Cohen's work at Walter Reed.) I highly recommend getting input and options from Dr Cohen and his NM team."
